THE GRANT CODE

The Grant Code prescribes regulations in accordanos. with which the Hong Kong Government aids public-education by means of Grants-in-Aid to English and Vernacular Schools approved by the Director of Education.

An "English School" is one in which the English language is the principal medium of instruction, and a "Vernacular School" is one in which the Chinese language is the principal medium of instruction.

Every school in receipt of a grant-in-Aid shall have an established committee of management which shall appoint a Correspondent who shall be deemed to be the Manager of such school for the purpose of these regulations, and shall be the channel for correspondence with Government concerning matters connected with
the grant.

Grants-in-Aid payable by Government fall under the
following headings :-

(i) Annual Recurrent Grants towards the running costs of
schools, - Sue Part I
(ii)
Contributions to the Provident Fund and Building Depre-

(iii) Capital Grants towards Buildings and Major Repairs, and

All Grant Schools in addition to the Regulations set out in this Grant Code are required to observe the provisions of the Education Ordinance, the Regulations made by the Governor in Council under the Education Ordinance, and all special "Regula- tions for the Conduct of Grant Schools" as made from time to time
the Director of Education.

The Goverment shall decide what grants shall be paid to each school, or whether no grant shall be paid, upon the advice of the Director of Education. In making his recommendation the Director shall be guided by the adequacy of the staff, premises, equipment, and curriculum, the standard of instruction, discipline, organization, general character and tone of the school, and by its compliance with the regulations of this Grant Code.
Provided that nothing in this section shall limit the power of the Director under Section 3 of this Code.

ANNUAL RECURRENT GRANTS
GENERAL
The amount of the grant shall be the difference between the approved expenditure of the school for the year and its regular general income from school fees and any other sources, subject to the provisions of Paragraphs 6, 37 and 39.
